Do you ever buy clothes from places like SheIn or Wish and immediately experience crushing regret for contributing to the unethical fast fashion industry? Yes, you say? All the time? It keeps you up at night? Well there's an easy solution, especially for you Louisvillians. The New Blak is a local shop that provides ethical, sustainable clothing made by women right here in Louisville.

When Amanda Dare founded The New Blak, she was committed to creating a company that both empowered women and produced well-made, sustainable clothing. All of the clothing sold at The New Blak is "made by empowered women for empowered women." In fact, the shop even has a studio attached where all of the clothing is made by, you guessed it, empowered women seamstresses.
On top of its mission to empower women, The New Blak also uses sustainable and ethically-sourced fabric to create their apparel. The super soft and durable fabric is made from bamboo and organic cotton, creating a comfortable but gorgeous look. The company also uses shipping supplies and bags from EcoEnclose which uses recycled, reusable, and biodegradable materials. Additionally, the company does not waste any fabric, instead integrating excess fabric into other parts of the product or repurposing it to create new products like headbands, hair ties, and belts.
Because the clothing is made by women for women, The New Blak's apparel is not only empowering but stylish and flattering. Although they typically only sell wardrobe basics in black, The New Blak is offering a "Colorful Lives Collection" in celebration of Pride 2019. The collection features their flattering Audrey top in red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. Also featured is a stylish and lightweight rainbow kimono that suits all of the tops from the collection. The best part is that $5 from each top will be donated to Louisville's Fairness Campaign to support LGBTQ civil rights legislation in Kentucky! The entire collection is gorgeous, comfortable, and flattering, and I highly recommend grabbing a few of them before they sell out!
Apart from the temporary collection, The New Blak also carries a selection of gorgeous black dresses as well as essential jumpsuits, cozy tees, slimming wraps, reversible swimsuits, and more! They're currently located in Oxmoor Center, off Shelbyville Road, but will be moving to another, undecided location in July. Until then, their products, including "last chance" items, are available online! So basically, you have no excuse for contributing to fast fashion anymore, and you can finally get a good night's rest.
Update: The New Blak is now located at 841 E Washington Street and is available for contact via email at shopthenewblak@gmail.com or via the contact form on their website. You can also find them on Instagram.
