Below is a selection of posts I designed and captioned for The New Blak's Instagram Profile as well as explanations for how I developed the captions.
The New Blak's turban headbands practically sell themselves, but I wanted to indicate that they're more than just an accessory: they're also functional!
One of Dolly Parton's most popular songs is "9-to-5," so when I discovered The New Blak's Dolly Pants were named after Parton herself, I knew I had to incorporate the song into a caption!
For posts with a particularly interesting picture, I try to incorporate what's happening in the image into the caption. For this particular photo, the model's thoughtful expression was perfect for a "thinking about..." caption.
Alfred Hitchcock once said, "puns are the highest form of literature." They also make for great Instagram captions! Using the phrase "over the moon" emphasizes that the necklace featured in the image is "moonstone" which helps our followers to remember the type of necklace, encouraging them to buy it later.
One of The New Blak's most popular selling points is that we use sustainable and ethical practices. It can be easy to focus on the look or feel of an item we're trying to sell, but it's equally important to remind our followers of the mission behind our company.
I often try to end Instagram captions with a call to action, or more simply, a question. Ending a caption with a question encourages interaction by directly asking followers to comment and engage with the post.
Earrings That Clay is a third-party merchant that sells a selection of their earrings via The New Blak's website and brick-and-mortar store. I noticed when they posted a new batch of earrings on their own Instagram, they'd sell out in minutes, but the earrings we sold through our channels weren't moving nearly as quickly. This caption played on the idea of the exclusivity and rarity of these earrings, making our followers feel "lucky" they had the opportunity to purchase them.
What would an Instagram profile be without the "aesthetic?" At The New Blak, we schedule three posts a day and strive to find a common theme for all three. Sometimes the posts all feature the same item, like the black skirt. Sometimes we feature the same fabric in a couple different products we sell, featured above with the golden fabric. And sometimes we feature three different versions of the same product, like the earrings and headbands. Scheduling posts this way gives our Instagram profile a more aesthetically pleasing look, but it also allows us to put more emphasis on a certain product or material over the course of a day.
